Aims

Psychological Enquiry 3 is the final in a series of modules designed to support student’s development of academic and professional skills as well as psychological literacy. Psychological literacy is defined as “the general capacity to adaptively and intentionally apply psychology to meet personal, professional and societal needs”. This module builds on previous Psychological Enquiry modules and furthermore draws on knowledge and skills gained from the wider degree programme. It provides the opportunity to develop and evidence competencies in preparation for life after graduation.

Outline Of Syllabus

Weekly interactive lectures and workshops indicative topics are:
•       Applying psychology to meet your personal and professional needs.
•       Planning your career.
•       Critical and scientific thinking in the 21st century.
•       Enhancing your social media presence,
•       Using psychology to live a healthy, ethical and meaningful life.
•       Intercultural competence and working with diversity.
•       Coding and computer skills for psychologists.

Intended Knowledge Outcomes

At the end of this module, students will be able to:

1)       Reflect on their learning in psychology and extract the most relevant aspects for their own personal, professional and societal development.
2)       Articulate how their learning in psychology can be applied to meet their own personal, professional and societal goals.
3)       Apply insight from their reflections to at least one area of their personal, professional and social lives.
4) Synthesize their psychological literacy to develop as global citizens.

Intended Skill Outcomes

At the end of this module, students will be able to:
1)       Plan and implement the next steps of their personal, professional and societal development.
2)       Plan, design and write effective CVs as well as managing effective professional online presence.
3)       Communicate effectively and professionally through different modalities.
4)       Effectively disseminate their empirical project through an oral presentation.

Teaching Rationale And Relationship

The interactive workshops and practical sessions will facilitate discussion and develop psychological literacy with a focus on encourage students to:
1)       Plan the next steps of their personal, professional and societal development.
2)       Plan, design and write effective CVs as well as managing effective professional online presence.
3)       Communicate effectively and professionally through different modalities.
4)       Effectively disseminate their empirical project through an oral presentation.
5) Engage in reflective practice.

These skills will be further developed through NSOL activities and guided independent study.

Assessment Rationale And Relationship

The reflective log is the main assessment of knowledge outcomes 1 – 3. Student will submit a reflective log made up of two tasks, these evidence (1) their development of psychological literacy during university and (2) their understanding of appropriate application of psychological literacy in a real world professional context. This log will also require the inclusion of action plans and CV, evidence of a professional social media profile to cover the attainment of these skill outcomes (1-3).
The oral presentation assesses skill outcomes 3 & 4. The topic of the presentation is the final year research project of the student. Presentations will be given as part of the final year project conference to a small group of their peers and will be marked by two members of staff.

If the module is failed, Stage 3 students may only be offered a resit if an honours degree is not awarded on the first occasion. Failed assessments will be the same format during the August resit period.
