HMP Northumberland
Support the development skills of individuals in custody at HMP Northumberland, a Category C Training and Resettlement prison in Morpeth, housing over 1,300 male prisoners.
About HMP Northumberland
Rehabilitation and reducing reoffending are key prison focuses, and individuals are supported to develop their education and skills through engagement with classroom education, practical training in a range of industry-focused skills, and working alongside key employers to develop critical work experience before release.
Technology and Digital are key skills gaps for individuals in custody, some of whom may have spent a long time away from the modern technology we’ve all come to rely on for day-to-day tasks. The Ministry of Justice in collaboration with Newcastle University are looking to support the development of digital skills in custody.
What is involved?
There are currently two opportunities for alumni to support HMP Northumberland:
- Digital upskilling sessions – a morning or afternoon classroom-based session with up to eight learners, supporting the development of skills linked to the volunteer’s area of expertise. Key skills gaps include: how to create an email address, online banking, use of smartphones, job searching, etc.
- Dragon’s Den – a business start-up challenge encouraging prisoners to consider self-employment on release. Volunteers would be welcome to support with delivering a session on topics such as using digital skills in business, digital branding/marketing, account/record keeping, etc. Volunteers would also be welcome to support with judging the final pitches!
Please note, all sessions will take place within HMP Northumberland.
