Tech Tea Parties

We are hosting a series of ‘Tech Tea Parties’ to support our university community in becoming more confident in using technology.

During our Tech Tea Parties, ‘Tech Knows’ will support participants with their tech challenges – this could involve helping fellow alumni become more tech-savvy with mobile phones and tablets through to setting up a social media account or online shopping.

Who is eligible to get involved?

We are seeking alumni, students and colleagues to volunteer to be our ‘Tech Knows’. You don’t have to be a tech expert, but you should have enough knowledge of everyday technology to support others to build their confidence. Ideal candidates should be confident in the following areas:

  • Tech Devices – setting up and using common tech devices such as mobile phones and tablets, as well as troubleshooting common issues.
  • Apps – downloading and setting up apps on devices, accessing and using apps, knowledge of what apps are useful.
  • Social Media – setting up and managing accounts on the main social media channels (Facebook, Twitter/X, Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn), confidence posting content across all channels.
  • Email – setting up and managing an email account, knowledge of basic functionality such as sending and creating emails, creating folders, and adding attachments.
  • Web Browsing – confidence in using search engines and online shopping websites.
  • Data and Security – basic knowledge of identifying online scams, creating and maintaining passwords, and basic data protection knowledge.

As this is an in-person event, participants must be able to travel to Newcastle University’s main campus on the dates of the sessions.

What is involved?

We would like to have between two and four ‘Tech Knows’ manage each table and offer advice, guidance, and practical support around their specific area of expertise.

There will also be ‘Tech Knows’ around the room who can offer support on anything not covered in the list above. ‘Tech Knows’ can provide 1-2-1 or group support at their station depending on the queries presented to them.

‘Tech Knows’ and attendees are encouraged to bring their own devices to provide demonstrations and to practically work through any tech challenges and questions.

When will the volunteering take place?

We are running two 2-hour sessions. You can opt to volunteer for one or both sessions.

Session 1: Wednesday 5 March 2025, 14.00 - 16.00

Session 2: Wednesday 30 April 2025, 14.00 - 16.00
