Research in this theme asks how and why the behaviour and life history of living organisms shape the dynamics and demography of the populations they reside in.

We work on a variety of organismal systems, with techniques including theoretical modelling, behavioural studies, life history assays, molecular ecology, and passive acoustic and imaging monitoring. 

Our Projects

Muntjac occurrence, Pete Robertson & Roy Sanderson

Mapping the occurrence of invasive non-native Muntjac deer. Pilot studies are being undertaken by MEP to determine if passive acoustic monitors (PAM) can be used to detect the distinctive ‘bark-like’ call of the Muntjac, and over what distances these can be detected.

Linking ecoEvolutionary dynamics & developmental plasticity, Isabel Smallegange

This research links eco-evolutionary population dynamics and developmental plasticity to enable accurate predictions on population responses to environmental change, using poecilogonous polychaetes and bulb mites as study systems.

Red Squirrels United, Aileen Mill, Zelda van der Waal & Simone Caruso

A collaboration between academics and conservation partners to develop invasive species management for the protection of red squirrels. Newcastle University are modelling the impact of the project and evaluating the local community-based conservation actions across the project.
