Background
Originally from Whitley Bay I went to university in Stirling to study Aquaculture (BSc and MSc). After graduating from Stirling Univeristy I worked at the UK's first commercial Cod hatchery in Machrihanish, Scotland. I moved back to Newcastle when I took the post of Teaching and Aquarium Technician on August 1st 2004.
After working as a Technician and Lab Manager in Marine Science until 2017, and then Biological Research Labs Team Leader in the School of Natural and Environmental Science until Jan 2020, I am now the Technical Manager for SNES
Roles and Responsibilities
As the School Technical Manager I am responsible for the fantastic team of technicians who look after our facilities and support our excellent research and teaching activities.
I lead the Technical Team Leaders in the school and work alongside Technical Managers across the SAgE Faculty, and within the Infrastructure Team,
I sit on a number of senior school and faculty boards and committees.
I am responsible for the technical team recruitment activities, and work with academic colleagues on recruitment of technical staff on research grants.
I hold budget responsibilities for the school laboratory and research facilities, and work on projects related to facility improvements.
Working closely with School and University Safety Officers to ensure compliance in our facilities, as well as in the technical team.
