Staff Profile
Dr Ellen Moss
Research Associate in Biostatistics
I'm a biological modeller with experience working in entomology, ecology, and epidemiology.
I use a combination of novel technologies, citizen science datasets, routinely collected observational datasets, and statistical modelling techniques to answer questions relating to: climate change impacts on species distributions, spatio-temporal modelling of disease risk, how novel data sources and analysis methods can be used to improve clinical trials and patient outcomes, and how machine learning methods can be used to support decision-making.
I am a member of the Biostatistics Research Group.
Current research
IMID project (2022-2026)
Developing innovative analytical methods to improve the design and evaluation of clinical trials for immune-mediated inflammatory diseases (IMIDs).
AI-Multiply project (2022-2024)
Investigating the relationships between multiple long-term conditions (MLTCs), multiple medications (polypharmacy), inequalities, and healthcare outcomes.
Past research
Acoustics project (2021-2022)
Attempting to develop new tools and data pipelines to remotely diagnose honeybee diseases, via sensors collecting acoustic and environmental data from honeybee hives and machine learning.
BWARS project (2020-2022)
Pilot project using long-term citizen science data (https://www.bwars.com/) to investigate the impacts of historic changes in climate on UK bee and wasp species.
COVID-19 project (2021)
Spatio-temporal modelling to investigate the spread of coronavirus in the Teesside area of North East England in relation to demography and policy interventions.
Hinterland project (2020-2021)
Using LoRaWAN environmental sensors to solve stakeholder monitoring problems. Working with Northumberland National Park.
BeeBase project (2019-2020)
Spatio-temporal modelling project investigating the impact of changes to national honeybee inspection policy for two notifiable honeybee diseases, in collaboration with APHA and DEFRA.
PhD project (2013-2018)
Investigating the impacts of climate change on plant-pollinator interactions and ecosystem services in agro-ecosystems.
I contribute on the following undergraduate module:
- BIO2037 Insect and arthropod biology
I also provide guest lectures and seminars upon request.
