Background
After graduating as a geologist (Durham University), I completed an M.Sc. in Geochemistry (University of Leeds) followed by a Ph.D. on the geomicrobiology of metal deposits in the deep ocean (University of Bristol). This was followed by a postdoctoral position at the University of Toronto (affiliated to the NASA Astrobiology Initiative) examining sources of gases in ancient fluids trapped within Canadian Precambrian Shield rocks. I then returned to the UK to join the Bristol Glaciology Centre (University of Bristol), where I carried out research in Greenland, Antarctica, and Svalbard on how life on and below glaciers and ice sheets impact local and regional biogeochemical cycles. I started as Lecturer (now Reader) in Geochemistry/Geomicrobiology at Newcastle University in August 2016, where I lead a research group focused on terrestrial and extraterrestrial (bio)geochemical cycling.

Research interests
I'm a member of the Earth, Ocean and Planetary Sciences (EOPS) group within the School of Natural and Environmental Sciences. My primary research interests are biogeochemical cycling within extreme environments on Earth, and the geochemistry/ potential habitability of analogous environments elsewhere in the solar system.
Research projects include:
- The origin of life at alkaline hydrothermal vents. This exciting new project, recently funded by a NERC 'Pushing Frontiers' grant, is using new experimental apparatus to try and reproduce some of the earliest steps in the origin of cellular life on Earth in the laboratory. Website coming soon!
- The chemistry and habitability of Mars. Ongoing and past projects funded by the UK Space Agency are investigating the formation and impact on habitability of oxidants such as perchlorates in Martian surface regolith, with potential applications for using similar 'mechanochemical' reactions to generate novel compounds for use in industry. ABRADE | ABRADE | Newcastle University (ncl.ac.uk)
- The impact of mineral defects on the habitability of the subsurface. This pioneering project is assessing the role of crushing by geological faulting in generating oxidants for microorganisms in the hot biosphere, both today and on early Earth. See CERBERUS website CERBERUS | CERBERUS | Newcastle University (ncl.ac.uk)
- The role of microorganisms in controlling nutrient flows and ice melt rates from glaciers and ice sheets, and their impacts on downstream ecosystems e.g. (https://eos.org/meeting-reports/climate-driven-change-in-ice-free-areas-of-greenland)
