Overview

Paul Waddell took the position of Crystallography Officer here in Newcastle in 2014. He is in charge of the day-to-day running of the Newcastle Chemical Crystallography Service.

Before moving to Newcastle, Paul worked as a Research Associate with Dr Jacqui Cole at the University of Cambridge. His work involved using X-ray diffraction and other spectroscopic techniques to elucidate structure-function relationships in various optoelectronic materials with particular emphasis on intermolecular interactions and their effect on physical properties and supramolecular environments.

Paul completed both his undergraduate and doctoral degrees at the University of St Andrews under the supervision of Profs Alex Slawin and Derek Woollins. His Ph.D research focused on the synthesis and characterisation of chalcogen-nitrogen-metal ring complexes with coordinated phosphorus ligands and related compounds with an emphasis on using single-crystal X-ray crystallography to study the relationship between the ³¹P NMR and X-ray data of these complexes.
