Name:
Toby Price
Job Title:
Learning Partnerships Facilitator
Background:
Part of the SAgE Faculty's Business, Innovation and Skills unit, Toby is a member of the Learning Partnerships team which acts as the nexus between our academics and students and external partners to enhance every student's professional skills and employability and provide them with insights into life in the workplace and future career opportunities. In doing so, the Learning Partnerships team is contributing to the University's 2030+ Education Strategy embodied by our Education for Life Framework. This includes providing students with equitable access to an educational experience that ensures they are fit for the future and the world in which they will live and work. regardless of background, identity, nationality, location, or mode of study. It also focuses on putting encounters with the leading edge of industry and practice at the heart of our curriculum and learning experiences.
After working in financial translation in Spain for more than 10 years, he completed a Master's Degree in Renewable Energy Management and moved into renewable energy journalism, specialising in wind and solar technologies. He moved back to the UK in 2010 and continued in translation and journalism, with a five-year stint lecturing on a Translation Master's at Durham University. In 2021, he opted for a radical change and set up a cycling charity (Cycling Minds) in Hexham, opening a community cycle hub and providing workplace training and guided e-bike rides for people facing challenges in their lives. Unfortunately, the extremely difficult funding environment and a staff shortage led to Cycling Minds becoming a volunteer-led organisation in the summer of 2023 and another fork in the road on Toby's career journey. Toby joined Newcastle University in 2023 and is assigned to the School of Natural and Environmental Sciences.
He is enthused by his current role as it involves enhancing young people's employability and requires strong communication and networking skills and cross-disciplinary experience, which Toby has developed throughout his life. Passionate about the environment, an opportunity to work with academics, students and external partners in natural and environmental sciences is also one he relishes.
Qualifications:
MSc in Renewable Energy Management, BSc in Geography
