Biographical Sketch
I am a soil scientist and ecosystem ecologist studying the cycling of carbon, nitrogen and other elements in terrestrial and near-coastal environments. I am interested in understanding how human activity, functional biodiversity and environmental variability interact to influence ecosystem structure and function. My research group is highly inter- and multi-disciplinary in nature, drawing from knowledge and expertise in soil science, ecology, microbiology, plant physiology, atmospheric chemistry, biometeorology, remote sensing and process-based modelling. My current research efforts are focused on human-modified tropical forests, agro-ecosystems and peatlands in Southeast Asia and Africa, although I have worked in a range of different regions and biomes in the past, including temperate rice systems in Europe, temperate peatlands, coastal salt marshes, tropical forests in the Caribbean and South America, arid grasslands and Arctic tundra.
