In my research, I apply whole systems approaches to energy problems, with energy networks (which link the various components of an energy system) as the primary focus. I use a mixture of probabilistic modelling, system simulation, and mathematical optimization to increase the affordability, reliability, and sustainability of energy systems ranging from building-level microgrids to transnational transmission. Whilst I work primarily in modelling and simulation, some of my approaches have been demonstrated and validated in laboratory and field trials.
My research aims to help deliver a swift and resilient transition to net-zero energy systems. I take a whole systems approach, covering energy production, transmission, distribution, and end use as well as the economic, market, and policy aspects which affect the operation of technical systems. As a whole systems practitioner, I decompose complex systems into their components and build mathematical models of these using only their key elements. This allows me to use optimization and probabilistic modelling techniques to understand and improve those systems, and ultimately provide evidence to inform better decision making. My research has been funded by the UK research councils, the European Union, and industrial partners.
