Decision to continue child heart surgery in Newcastle welcomed
The announcement that heart surgery on children should continue to be carried out at Newcastle's Freeman Hospital means unrivalled opportunities for further research between the University and Newcastle Hospitals.
Responding to the announcement that surgery should continue at the Freeman as one of seven hospitals in England allowing the concentration of expertise, Professor Chris Day, Pro Vice Chancellor for the Faculty of Medical Sciences said; “We welcome this decision and look forward to continuing our close collaboration with the excellent staff at the Freeman Hospital.
"As well as providing the best possible care to young patients across the region, this will allow unrivalled opportunities for further research and development in the area of children’s heart disease where the partnership between the University and the Newcastle Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has led the field for many years."
