More than 300 'connectors' are needed to help set up a stunning digital art installation which will run the length of Hadrian’s Wall.

Connecting Light was developed at Newcastle University’s CultureLab by Visiting Professor Zachary Lieberman, and promises to be one of the most spectacular projects of the London 2012 Festival.

It will span the 73 miles of Hadrian’s Wall and will use more than 400 weather balloons lit by LEDs to transmit messages from Segedunum Roman Fort to Bowness-on-Solway.

Kerry Shaw from the Hadrian's Wall Trust said: "Connecting Light is a really exciting opportunity to bring people together across the world.

"Zach's concept for Connecting Light is to view the Wall as a bridge not a barrier, allowing people to share their experiences and thoughts about the barriers, physical or emotional, in their lives today.

"We're looking for over 300 connectors to help create the installation over the two days and be part of this inspiring celebration of the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

"The connectors will help ensure the artwork spans the impressive vistas of the most dramatic areas of the Hadrian's Wall Country landscape."

Connecting Light will become a line of pulsating colours as messages are sent along the Wall. It will be visible in the evening and accessible to visitors at several locations on the ground. There will also be drive by routes. It will be able to be viewed remotely all over the world through the internet and people everywhere will be able to interact with the messaging.

Connecting Light will light up Hadrian’s Wall on Friday, 31 August and Saturday, 1 September.

The closing date for applications to become a connector is Sunday, 12 August and the connectors can choose to be involved over either one or both days of the installation.

In return for a small contribution of £25 successful connectors will also become a Friend of Hadrian's Wall Country, receiving benefits throughout the year associated with supporting the charitable trust responsible for the conservation and protection of the Hadrian's Wall World Heritage Site.

The installation was commissioned by LOCOG (London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games), and funded by the Department for Culture Media and Sport with support using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England.

It is being produced in partnership with the Hadrian's Wall Trust, the Cultural Olympiad programme in the North East and North West and local partners. Project management is by Culture Creative and technical support is by Arciform.
