Advisory group to consider investments in fossil fuels

Newcastle University agreed this week to set up an advisory group to consider all aspects of the debate around investments in fossil fuels.

Following a presentation by the Students’ Union, brought to the board under the university’s Socially Responsible Investment Policy, it has been agreed that all aspects of the debate will be considered.

Led by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Tony Stevenson, the Advisory Group will cover topics such as the University’s investment in fossil fuel companies and their investment in the University; the employment prospects of Newcastle students in carbon-related industries; the University’s R&D investment in renewable energy and the role of the University as a consumer of fossil fuels.

The group is expected to present its report to the board in the New Year.

Claire Boothman, President of the Students' Union, said: "As a student body we are glad that this issue has been taken seriously by the University and it is now on Council's agenda to have a decision in the New Year.

"We will have student representation on the advisory group, however as a one year President, I personally won't be able to sit on the group but I am sure my successor will be pleased to take on the matter."
