Last night, the University swept the board with three awards winning University of the Year, Students' Union of the Year and Employer Engagement of the Year for the Business School.

The Educate North Awards celebrate and recognise best practice and excellence in the education sector in the North.

Newcastle was recognised for its outstanding performance in the areas of business finance, teaching, research, student experience, innovation and economic impact.

Awards reflect outstanding quality

Professor Tony Stevenson, Deputy Vice-Chancellor at Newcastle University, said: "We are delighted to have been named University of the Year, and to have won Students' Union of the Year and Employer Engagement of the Year for the Business School.

"These awards reflect Newcastle University's outstanding quality in teaching and research along with our focus on high levels of student satisfaction.

"The success of these awards follows the recent QS World University Rankings by Subject results which highlighted the University as being among the best for many of its popular courses."

Judges gave Newcastle the University of the Year award as they felt the “university demonstrated a clear strategic vision and contributed significantly locally, but also nationally and globally. The academic strength, management and financial stewardship are all contributing factors to their success.”

The University’s continued focus on world-changing research, investment in new facilities and strong, strategic partnerships reflect the value it places on staying true to regional roots while addressing the challenge of increasing global competition.

Newcastle University applies academic excellence to real-world challenges, under its three Societal Challenge themes of Ageing, Social Renewal and Sustainability.

Students have access to some of the best facilities and student services in the UK. Learning is supported by an award-winning library service and 24-hour computing clusters. The Library has over 500,000 e-books – one of the largest e-book collections in the country.

Student satisfaction

The National Student Survey found that 91% of our students were happy with their time at Newcastle and the Times Higher Education Student Experience Survey 2015 placed the University 10th in the country for teaching quality, opportunities for students through industry placements and the friendliness of campus, while international students placed it 12th in the world.

Newcastle University’s Employer Engagement of the Year award for the Business School was for its Global Experience Opportunity Programme's Regional Internship initiative.

Professor John Wilson, Newcastle University Business School’s Director, said: “We are delighted that the Business School has won the Employer Engagement award for our Global Experience Opportunity Programme's Regional Internship initiative with the Federation of Small Business and Xiamen University, China.

“The Global Experience Opportunity offering supports the School's internationalisation agenda by strengthening the Business School’s relationships with our international partner institutions and building relationships with employers in the North East.

“The benefits of this initiative extend not only to creating globally employable students through their experience of working in a multi-cultural team, but also by engaging them in a meaningful project with businesses in the region, which supports Newcastle University's global and civic engagement.”

The awards ceremony was held at the Hilton Hotel in Manchester.
