Contemporary fiction
The Booker Prize Foundation One Book project has returned to Newcastle University.
Each year, a novel by an author shortlisted for the prestigious Man Booker Prize within the last five years, is selected as the One Book choice, distributed around campus and discussed in lectures, seminars and book groups. The annual project then culminates with a conversation with the author at a prestigious public event in the University's King’s Hall.
This year, 3,000 copies of Fiona Mozley’s Elmet have been made available around campus. The idea behind the scheme is to encourage students to appreciate and engage with the very best contemporary literary fiction, regardless of their chosen field of study.
Modern fairytale
Elmet is the story of a family living on the outskirts of society and has been described as a ‘modern fairytale.’ It was shortlisted for the Royal Society of Literature Ondaatje Prize, and won both a Somerset Maugham Award and the Polari Prize. Fiona Mozley was also shortlisted for the Sunday Times/PDF Young Writer of the Year Award 2018.
She will be in conversation with Creative Writing lecturer Dr Rachel Hewitt in the Kings Hall, Newcastle University, on 14 November.
Professor Sinéad Morrissey, Director of the Newcastle Centre of Literary Arts said: “We’re delighted to host another One Book event this year, and especially pleased to showcase such a riveting, dark, thrilling tale, beautifully crafted, by one the UKs most exciting new voices.”
