Published today (2 September), the rankings place Newcastle University joint 146th in the world and in the top 20 in the UK. Areas where Newcastle University scored highly include: Citations (ranked 108^th globally) and International Outlook, which measures the proportion of international staff, proportion of international students and the scale of international co-authorship (ranked 134^th).

Newcastle University has improved in four of the five indicators that Times Higher Education uses to compile the ranking: Teaching, Research, Citations and Industry Income. 

This is the second year in a row that Newcastle University has moved up in these rankings.

Professor Chris Day, Vice-Chancellor and President at Newcastle University, said: “It is pleasing that Newcastle University performs consistently well in global university rankings, and that we are ranked in the top 100 to 150 of the leading world rankings. The latest overall ranking, and improvement in the majority of categories that make up the score, highlights the global quality, impact and reputation of our University. It is a credit to the dedication and hard work of colleagues and students, especially against the backdrop of the global pandemic.”

The latest rankings build on the University’s strong performance in other international league tables, including the QS World University Rankings 2022, which ranked Newcastle 134^th in the world. The Times Higher Education Impact Rankings 2021 placed Newcastle 15th in the world and fifth in Europe for its impact on society and leadership towards achieving the UN’s sustainable development goals.
