The Architecture, Planning and Landscape Degree Show returns to campus this year in time to mark 100 years of accredited architecture programmes at Newcastle University.

The annual event, held online during the Covid-19 pandemic, is a showcase for imagination and practical application, and demonstrates the talent of undergraduate and postgraduate students on the University's Architecture, Landscape and Urban Design programmes.

“The Architecture Degree Show is always a cause for celebration,” says Director of Architecture, Samuel Austin. “But this year is even more noteworthy as not only is it the centenary of Architecture here at Newcastle, it’s also the first full show on campus in two years.

“Each year our students impress and surprise us. The standard of work this year is exceptional. It’s great to see our students engaging so seriously and creatively with the urgent social and environmental challenges we face. I look forward to welcoming people to our studios to see it in person.”

This year, postgraduates have been considering potential futures for Gateshead’s Riverside Park, which was awarded £550k from the Government's Community Renewal Fund in 2021. The students carried out an in-depth group research report, analysing the physical and social context of the site, and its environmental and cultural context. They presented their shared research document and masterplan manifesto for the area where the historic Dunston Staithes is sited to Gateshead City council last October.

Other projects include reimagining Wallsend’s Forum Shopping Centre as an urban commons – a place of culture and exchange; ideas for tourism in post-industrial Redcar and care homes specifically designed to cater to the needs of people with dementia.

Show and exhibition

After the opening of the show on 1 July, the School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape will host an after-show centenary celebration from 7pm to 9pm at Newcastle Contemporary Art amongst the exhibition, 'How We Live Now: Making Space in the North East with Matrix Feminist Design Co-operative', which features work from alumni, staff and students at the School.

The Architecture Degree show takes place in Newcastle University’s Architecture Building on 1 July 5pm to 8pm, then 10am-4pm weekdays until 14 July.

The show will travel to The Crypt on the Green, in Clerkenwell, London, for a pop-up show from 6pm to 9.30pm on 8 July.
