A Newcastle professor has received the prestigious Society of Cosmetic Scientists Lifetime Achievement Award.
Mark Birch-Machin, Professor of Molecular Dermatology at Newcastle University, has been honoured for his outstanding contribution to the field of cosmetic science.
His research focuses on the response of human skin to the environment, including sunlight and pollution, particularly within the context of skin ageing and disease.
Decades of experience
Professor Birch-Machin has been funded over the last 30 years by UK research councils, charities, UK government as well as global companies.
In particular, he has played a pivotal role in pioneering the use of mitochondrial DNA as a biomarker of environmentally induced damage in skin and he has published extensively on his research findings.
Upon receiving the award, Professor Birch-Machin said: “It is a privilege to be awarded this medal, particularly since my father recently passed away and it was him who ignited my passion for learning.”
Professor Birch-Machin is a member of the Editorial Board of several international dermatology journals, and national/international advisory boards and grant committees for skin research and UK cosmetic regulation.
Spin-out companies
He has co-founded three spin-out companies and is also a co-inventor on multiple patents, including the invention of a dermatology product that is sold in more than 1,000 stores in Canada. He sits on various cosmetic and advertising regulatory committees.
One of his key spin-out companies is Skin Life Analytics, a skin life test which can help guide your skincare regime to better protect against damage
Professor Birch-Machin is Former Director of Business Development at Newcastle University (Medical Sciences) and Faculty Ambassador for the UK National Innovation Centre for Ageing.
