Newcastle Pro-Vice-Chancellor chosen as CBI North East Chair

Professor Jane Robinson, Pro-Vice-Chancellor Engagement and Place at Newcastle University, has been appointed Chair of CBI’s North East Council.

Professor Robinson leads the University's engagement and place strategy, focusing on partnerships to enhance social, economic, and cultural contributions to the region. Previously, she was the Chief Operating Officer at Durham University and Chief Executive of Gateshead Council. 

As well as overseeing the activities of the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) in the North East and Tees Valley, Jane will join the CBI’s most senior policy-mandating and cross-economy board – the CBI Chairs’ Committee.  

Representing the views of regional companies, she will ensure the UK’s most influential business network reflects the priorities of firms in North East England.

Her expertise in the higher education sector will be of great value also to our national committee. 

“I’d like to thank Frank Millar, CEO at CPI (Centre for Process Innovation) for his dedicated service as Chair in 2023 and 2024. His steadfast support and guidance have been invaluable, especially through some tough times for the business community. We are pleased to confirm that Frank will continue to contribute as Vice Chair throughout 2025.” 

Professor Jane Robinson, New North East Chair, CBI said:

It is more important than ever that we come together as a business community with our partners to maximise the benefits for the North East and the country as a whole.  

“I am committed to ensuring that our voice is heard nationally to inform policies and initiatives that support sustainable growth, innovation and which benefit everyone. I look forward to working closely with the North East and wider CBI team.” 

Professor Robinson joined the CBI North East Council in 2022. Her term as Chair will run to the end of December 2026.
