Research Strengths

Research Strengths

Our vision is to be a world-leading university, advancing knowledge, providing creative solutions and solving global problems. We're world class at many things, but particularly recognised for our expertise in these research areas.

Ageing and health

We are recognised internationally for our research into ageing and health. We host the National Innovation Centre for Ageing, bringing together scientists, industry, healthcare professionals and the public to find new ways to improve the quality of life for older people.

Newcastle University has partnered with the Alan Turing institute, which is working to realise the world-changing potential of data science. We are also home to the £30m National Innovation Centre for Data, linking leading academic talent from universities with industry and the public sector. Our School of Computing is number one in the UK for research impact and we are the world's largest repository of urban data.

Culture and creative arts

These are at the heart of our research excellence, teaching and work with partners and communities. We have award-winning practitioners in fine art, music and poetry, while our School of English Language, Literature and Linguistics' research is rated first in the UK for impact. We weave our strengths in arts, culture and creativity into interdisciplinary projects.

Our research into cities is making sustainable development in urban areas a reality. Together with Newcastle City Council, we are developing the £350m Newcastle Helix, which will be a global centre for urban innovation. We also lead the Newcastle City Futures project, which aims to address the future needs of Newcastle and Gateshead.

City at night time

Our £20m National Centre for Energy Systems Integration and £5m Supergen Energy Networks Hub link experimental research with data analysis and modelling, in collaboration with utility and manufacturing companies. We are home to the National Centre for Low Carbon Energy Storage and are well known for our work on smart grids, which is tackling energy sustainability, security and affordability issues.
