Research Interests
Business strategy. Business elites. Entrepreneurship. Philanthropy. Historical organization studies.
Current Work
I am currently engaged in three main sets of projects:
1. Entrepreneurship and Philanthropy conducted with various members of the Centre for Research on Entrepreneurship Wealth and Philanthropy (REWP): http://www.ncl.ac.uk/rewp.
Inequality and large scale giving in the U.S. (with Gerhard Kling and Mairi Maclean)
Philanthropic identities (with Mairi Maclean).
Philanthropy, enterprise and society in the North East of England (with Mairi Maclean, Michael Price and Vesela Harizanova)
Cross-national diffusion of philanthropic models (with Frank Mueller, Ruomei Yang and Mairi Maclean)
Philanthropy and higher education (with Alison Gibson and Frank Mueller)
Events and elite philanthropic networking (PhD student Ruomei Yang, jointly supervised with Frank Mueller)
Philanthropy and socio-economic development in Pakistan (PhD student Muhammad Khan, jointly supervised with Michael Price).
2. Business Elites and the Field of Power conducted with Mairi Maclean and Gerhard Kling. This long standing project has entered a new phase focused on the survival strategies of business elites within the field of power using Boardex data for the U.S. and applying the original quantitative methodology we detail in ‘Establishing causal order in longitudinal studies combining binary and continuous dependent variables’, Organizational Research Methods, vol. 20(4), 2017: 770-799.
3. Historical Organization Studies conducted with Mairi Maclean, Stewart Clegg, Roy Suddaby and Bill Foster: https://www.researchgate.net/project/Historical-Organization-Studies. We define historical organization studies as ‘organizational research that draws extensively on historical data, methods and knowledge to promote historically informed theoretical narratives attentive to both disciplines’. Group members have written extensively on conceptual and methodological issues and are responsible for developing and applying key constructs such as dual integrity and rhetorical history.
