About Hannah
Current role: Broadcast Assistant Apprentice at Times Radio
Degree studied: Media, Communication and Cultural Studies, 2023
What is your current role?
I’m currently working for Jane Garvey and Fi Glover’s show on Times Radio. My days consist of writing cues, booking guests, editing audio and choosing fun culture stories.
They have a really funny podcast that I get to work on too where they have a big interview with someone who has something interesting coming up or an important story to tell.
The team have been really welcoming and I feel like I’m learning so much every day.
Studying at Newcastle
In what ways did your degree at Newcastle prepare you for your current role?
I don’t feel like it prepared me for the job itself, as I think a lot of that has to be learned through actually being in the role.
But it did build my confidence and my degree was quite broad that it allowed me to get to know more about the industry before I really decided what I wanted to do.
I also think the modules that delve into inequalities in the media industry have given me a really good grounding for how I can make a positive impact on society through my role.
What did you enjoy the most?
I really loved the city itself; I think Newcastle is perfect for the student experience, and everyone is so kind and welcoming.
In terms of the degree there were some really amazing tutors to learn from and I always felt there was someone I could go to if things were getting difficult.
I wish I had known to take more advantage of the facilities in the culture lab but beginning my degree in the middle of Covid is to blame for that, I think.
