Survey: Defining Timbre In Simple Terms?

Call for Survey Responses

How do we talk about Timbre? It is not easy without relying on words like: brassy or heavy or whooshy, and these may mean something completely different between two people.

We are conducting research that seeks to understand if there is a basic, simple, introductory terminology we can use and encourage educators to use to help start the journey of defining (not ultimately confining) timbre in the same way we have descriptors of pitch and rhythm.

It will be presented as a paper and, if useful, provide evidence for persuading educators and examining bodies to include basic terminology in their practice and publications.

If you have eight minutes (or so) would you mind answer the questions in this survey to help this research? https://forms.office.com/r/std1Ai06vb

The first part is about you as someone who listens to music but it is nothing that could identify you as a person once submitted, it just helps us understand where that information you are giving is coming from.

As the collector of the data I do get to see your email address but I will not use this to contact you nor will I make it part of the data collection.

Further, all data from this survey will be destroyed on 1st December 2025.
