Chris Stokel-Walker is a freelance journalist for The New York Times, BBC, The Guardian, Economist, Wired and New Scientist, among others.
He also helps run the JesmondLocal news project with Newcastle University student volunteers and previously acted as deputy editor for quarterly magazine The Northern Correspondent.
He is the author of YouTubers: How YouTube shook up TV and created a new generation of stars (Canbury Press, 2019) and TikTok Boom: China, the US and the Superpower Race for Social Media (Canbury Press, 2021), The History of the Internet in Byte-Sized Chunks (Michael O'Mara Books, 2023), and How AI Ate The World (Canbury Press, 2024).
In 2020, he hosted BBC Radio 4 documentary Everyone's a Star, and is regularly called on to provide context to news events around technology and social media for broadcasters. In 2023, he hosted BBC Radio 4 documentary Artificial Implosion. He is the host of Techtonic, a podcast for international non-governmental organisation Article 19. He also chairs panel discussions and hosts live events.
He has also served as editor of FFWD, a publication focused on online video published by Medium, and as interim editor of Apolitical, a global learning platform for public servants.
