Staff Profile
Dr Georgios Petropoulos
Lecturer
I am a lecturer in philosophy at Newcastle University (Fixed-Term). I'm also temporarily serving as Degree Programme Director for the PG Certificate in Research Training with Researcher Education Development (RED).
My expertise lies in the fields of modern European philosophy, phenomenology, and philosophy for/with children. I also have a vivid interest in Ancient Philosophy.
Prior to Joining Newcastle University, I worked as a teaching fellow at University College Dublin (UCD) and as a Research Fellow at the UCD Centre for Ethics in Public life. Additionally, I participated in the Irish Research Council-funded BodyDementia project and actively engaged in public outreach by organizing philosophical events and co-organizing the Irish and International Young Philosopher Awards.
My interests span across classical, critical, and applied approaches to phenomenology. Currently, I co-edit a special issue on "Embodied Accounts of Dementia," drawing on critical and applied perspectives to understand the lived experience of dementia. Additionally, my research focuses on the phenomenology of addiction. Beyond phenomenology, I hold a strong interest in the philosophy of education, particularly the "philosophy for/with children" pedagogy and the philosophy of childhood. My work has been published in journals such as the Journal of the British Society for Phenomenology, Critical Horizons, Childhood & Philosophy.
I currently teach Ancient Philosophy II: Aristotle and Beyond, Introduction to Moral Philosophy and supervise Stage 2 projects.
