Realising Opportunities Cohort 16

Information for current Year 12 students taking part in Realising Opportunities as Newcastle University's local cohort (2026 entry).

The ASM is coming up soon and is an essential step to completing the programme!

The Academic Skills Module event (ASM) forms a compulsory part of the Realising Opportunities Programme and is taking place at Newcastle University on Wednesday 10th April.

Where is the ASM?

The event will be based at Newcastle University’s campus

The location will also be clearly signposted once you arrive on to campus. 

 

What to expect at the ASM

The ASM is designed to give you an insight into student life by offering you the opportunity to:

  • develop your note-taking and referencing skills
  • attend an undergraduate lecture in your chosen area of interest
  • meet current students studying at Newcastle University.

You can look forward to the following timetable of activities:

09:30 Registration & Welcome Sign in upon arrival to confirm your attendance. The Newcastle University RO team will then welcome you to the ASM and run through the day ahead.
10:00 Academic Note Taking During this session, you’ll be guided through the best tips and tricks for effective note-taking, to help prepare you for university-level study.
11:00 Academic Subject Stream Lecture This will be a lecture on your chosen subject stream, delivered by Newcastle University Academics. A chance to put your new note-taking skills into practice!
12:00 Lunch Break Lunch will be provided for you by Newcastle University.
12:45 Academic Note-Taking - Small Group Work Work together in your organised groups on a practical academic note-taking task.
13:45 Referencing This session will introduce you to the basics of referencing, a key university-level skill.
14:45 Round-up Wrap-up and evaluation.
15:00 ASM Quiz Let’s test your knowledge on the Academic Skills Module.
15:20 Q&A Session An opportunity to ask the Newcastle University RO Team any questions you have following your ASM sessions or the RO programme itself. 
15:30 Optional Campus Tour Option for a student-led tour of Newcastle University’s campus.
16:30 Finish Home time!

This event is exclusively for students who are taking part in RO, as part of Newcastle University's local cohort.

To confirm your place, you must sign up for the ASM event by 31st March

You cannot attend without completing the form so please ensure you do this as soon as you can.
