Newcastle University in Singapore hosted a groundbreaking AI and data innovations international conference, paving the way for future collaboration in sustainable infrastructure development

AI and Data Innovations for Sustainability and Infrastructure Conference: A Resounding Success

The AI and Data Innovations for Sustainability and Infrastructure conference, hosted by the the Newcastle University in Singapore (NUIS) from 1 to 3 April 2025, brought together 250 participants from Singapore, Malaysia, the UK, and the USA. The event showcased cutting-edge AI and data innovations discussions aimed at enhancing sustainability and infrastructure.

The conference featured a diverse attendance, including representatives from academia, energy, urban planning, transportation, and technology startups. Over three days, the event covered the following main themes:

  • Day 1: AI and Data Innovations for Energy Sustainability
  • Day 2: AI and Data Innovations for Liveable Cities
  • Day 3: Responsible AI and Infrastructure

Keynote speakers represented public and private sector organisations such as the Singapore’s Energy Market Authority (EMA), Agency for Science, Technology, and Research (A*STAR), the Centre for Liveable Cities (CLC), GovTech Singapore, JTC (Jurong Town Corporation) Corporation, Shell, Mott MacDonald, Infineon, and Siemens Energy.

Key takeaways from the conference highlighted the importance of AI and data in creating sustainable energy solutions and liveable urban environments. Continuous innovation and collaboration between academia, industry, and government were emphasized as essential.

Additionally, the need for upskilling the workforce and training future professionals to support advancements in AI and data technologies was underscored. Understanding the risks and responsibilities associated with AI-managed infrastructure was also deemed critical.

The conference reinforced Newcastle University and NUiS's leadership in AI and data innovations for sustainability. By hosting this international event, they demonstrated their commitment to advancing research and fostering collaborations that drive sustainable solutions.

Looking ahead, NUiS plans to launch the Master of Science (MSc) in Energy Management next year, leveraging connections made during the conference to enhance these programmes with industry insights and guest lectures.

The conference was funded by the UK government’s Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) tactical funds and supported by the British High Commission, with the High Commissioner opening the event as one of the keynote speakers.
