Singapore Business Solutions Data Camp 2024

Bringing Real World Business Knowledge to the Classroom

Students from Newcastle’s UK campus and Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS) participated in a summer camp from 10 to 21 June 2024 where they worked together to solve real-world business challenges using actual business data.

The Singapore Business Solutions Data Camp 2024 - co-organised by Newcastle University in Singapore (NUiS), UK's National Innovation Centre for Data (NICD), and Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS) - was a two-week intensive program designed to bridge the gap between academic knowledge and practical business challenges. The camp was held at the campus of SUSS

During the camp, students tackled real-world business challenges using actual business data, under the guidance of data experts from the UK's National Innovation Centre for Data (NICD). Through workshops, seminars, and hands-on projects, the participants gained valuable insights into business operations in Singapore and received mentorship from industry professionals to help solve these business problems.

Faculty members from NUiS and SUSS conducted workshops on data visualisation and artificial intelligence, while industry experts from Nvidia, Carbon Trust, AI Singapore, and United Overseas Bank shared insights on the application of big data across various sectors, including government, sustainability, climate change, banking, and technology.

Industry visits to DNATA, Seatrium, and MSD (known as Merck & Co., Inc. in the USA) provided the students with an in-depth look at how these multinational companies operate in Singapore.

These are what some of the student participants have to say about the camp:

“It was enriching to collaborate with Singaporean students, participate in social and cultural events. These experiences not only broadened my cultural awareness but also enabled me to make new friends and forge meaningful connections beyond borders, making the entire experience incredibly rewarding.” Charles Chilufya (BA in Geography and Planning, Newcastle).

“We had a unique opportunity to collaborate with Newcastle University students from diverse backgrounds and discipline. Working as a multi-cultural team we focused on data driven decision making and multi-disciplinary approaches towards developing and pitching business models to various real-world business problems. It was quite an enriching experience.” – Syaqilah Suhaimi (BSc in Psychology, SUSS).

“Throughout the camp, we learned the importance of asking "WHY?", listening to different perspectives, and truly understanding the core of business problems. We also attended workshops on data visualisation and heard from incredible guest speakers like Dr Simon See (from NVIDIA) on AI and sustainability, and Dr. Muhammad Ramadan (from NUiS) on the power of machine learning and artificial intelligence.” Nadia Al Mejamai – (LLB in Law, Newcastle).
