We are delighted to offer a range of medicine related sessions, activities and resources.

All of our sessions are free to attend and enable students to learn and experience more about medicine!

 

 

Mini Medical School

Explore the exciting world of Medical Science

Our Mini-Medical School runs every autumn and is open to anyone aged 15 and over.

The programme offers the public the chance to find out about exciting topics. This includes current research developments at the University. 

Previous programmes have covered a range of exciting topics, including:

  • anaesthetics
  • dermatology
  • emergency medicine
  • medical scanning technology
  • psychology
  • pharmacy
  • sport and exercise science

The Mini Medical School will be held in a hybrid format, so there is the option for attendees to join in person on our University campus, or virtually via Zoom. 

Evening lectures will run on Thursdays between 18:00-19:00 on the following dates:

  • 31 October
  • 7 November
  • 14 November
  • 21 November
  • 28 November

We will also be running an additional Applying to Medicine session on 5 December. 

Further details on how to join the online sessions will be sent out once your place has been confirmed.

 

Faculty of Medical Sciences Experience Days

Our Faculty of Medical Sciences (FMS) Experience Days (formerly named MaD Days) give you the opportunity to come onto campus for a day. Here you can experience the life of a student in our Faculty of Medical Sciences. Experience Days are open to students in year 12 (or first year of college).

During the day you will take part in lectures and practical activities using our fantastic facilities. you will also receive application support. This includes a UCAT workshop and a general talk about applying to Medicine or Dentistry.

Our Experience Days take place in November - December with additional dates in April. Applications for the event will open in September.

Application support sessions

We offer several virtual sessions. These aim to aid and inform you about the application process for medicine.

We offer three pre-application sessions: 

  • a talk on Applying to Medicine and Dentistry covering the process and admissions requirements
  • personal statements session offering guidance on content, starting points and top tips
  • our UCAT Preparation Workshop which guides you on booking your test, understanding its sections and gives you an opportunity to try out some practice questions 

We also offer an interview preparation workshop. We aim this at students who have already applied to medicine and are preparing for an interview. We will discuss the different types of interviews and how to prepare. We will also look at some example answers from some of our current students.

There will be an opportunity to ask any questions you may have at the end of each session.

 Please note these sessions do give information which is specific to Newcastle University. Some of the content may be useful when applying to any Medical School.

Pathways to Medicine

Pathways to Medicine is a scheme delivered by Newcastle University, in collaboration with the Sutton Trust, to help students who are interested in a career in medicine. The scheme comprises of a comprehensive programme of academic and medicine specific support including work experience and online mentoring. It is open to students in the North-East of England who meet certain widening participation eligibility criteria.

Participating students receive a lower conditional offer, of three A Level grades (or equivalent) below the typical offer. Offer is dependent on UCAT and interview score.

 

STEM Newsletter

Our STEM newsletter is a monthly email. We send out information about science, technology, engineering and maths activities and events happening at Newcastle University.

We have a STEM Newsletter which is designed for school and college teachers. This is so they can find out about what opportunities we are offering their pupils. It encompasses all the STEM subject areas including, medicine.

 We also have a STEM Student Newsletter. This is aimed at pupils considering studying STEM at university. This is so they stay in the loop with all our fantastic opportunities across all STEM areas.
