At Newcastle, we invite applications from suitably qualified candidates who wish to pursue an MLitt (Masters by Research) or a PhD in Japanese studies (or another field were the research focus is related to Japan), starting October 2025. We particularly encourage students with an interest in contemporary Japanese literature, gender and/or popular culture to apply, but still welcome applications from candidates with an interest in any area of Japanese studies.
Candidates of any nationality are eligible to apply for the studentships. However, candidates for masters’ studentships who are non-UK nationals are eligible only if they are settled in the UK or have been ordinarily resident in the UK for at least 3 years immediately preceding the start of their masters course. This does not apply to PhD studentship candidates who are non-UK nationals.
