Background

Prior to joining Newcastle University, I have taught interpreting for years and worked as a part-time interpreter in various legal and business settings. With educational background in both linguistics and law, I am particular interested in the interface between language and law, interpreting and society, multilingualism, linguistic diversity and social justice, with current research focusing on medical and legal interpreting.

I am open to PhD and MLitt applications in the above-mentioned areas and other areas of translation and interpreting.

Research areas

I am interested in sociological, sociolinguistic and discourse analytical approach to translation and interpreting and intersection between linguistics and law. My focus is on language access and social justice, multilingualism and interpreter-mediated communication. I am also interested in translator and interpreter training, specialised translation such as legal translation, gender issues and language ideology.

I am currently working on two projects: one on interpreter-mediated interaction in legal settings and one on healthcare interpreting.   

My main research interests include: 

• public service/community interpreting (e.g., legal and medical interpreting)
• sociolinguistics, discourse analysis in translation and interpreting
• migration, multilingualism and translation/interpreting
• linguistic diversity and social justice
• legal translation
• interpreter education
• language and law 
• power, ideology and gender studies 

I have supervised PhD projects adopting the following approach:

• corpus-driven approach to translation/interpreting
• psychological and linguistic approach to interpreting
• multimodal approach to interpreting
• historical approach to translation/interpreting

I am interested in supervising PhD and MLitt students on projects related to the above-mentioned areas and other topics of translation and interpreting.
