Chinese Painting at Gateshead Central Library

On November 25, the Confucius Institute at Newcastle University collaborated with Gateshead Central Library to successfully organize the Chinese Painting Workshop.

Throughout the year, the Gateshead Central Library has closely collaborated with the Confucius Institute at Newcastle University, offering local residents opportunities to participate in adult Chinese language courses and Tai Chi workshops. In response to the community's enthusiastic requests, the Chinese Painting Workshop was specifically introduced to provide a more diverse cultural experience.

The workshop, led by Confucius Institute's Chinese teacher Wanxiu Chen, with assistance from volunteer teacher Yingying Wei, commenced with an engaging introduction to the rich history and various types of Chinese painting. Chen captivated participants with a vibrant presentation of classic artworks, sparking a profound interest in Chinese brush painting. Following this, she introduced the "Four Treasures of the Study" and guided everyone in practising basic brushstrokes.

Participants immersed themselves in the hands-on experience, progressing from fundamental brushstrokes to overall composition. With the patient guidance of Chen and Wei, participants successfully completed their first Chinese painting—a charming panda.

After the workshop, participants enthusiastically filled out feedback forms, expressing their appreciation for the workshop. They conveyed a deeper understanding of the allure of Chinese painting through firsthand experience, acknowledging the joy of artistic creation.

Gateshead Central Library's representative, Andy Hodgkinson, commended the success of the Chinese Painting Workshop and expressed the desire to continue hosting similar cultural exchange events in the future. This creative workshop not only provided local residents with an opportunity to explore traditional Chinese culture but also fostered friendships and exchanges between different cultures.
