Hunting mammals in Borneo’s rainforests

Understanding indigenous communities’ motivation for and the cultural practice of hunting in Brunei Darussalam

The research will be focused on understanding how local cultural values are intertwined with the large tracts of undisturbed forests and the mammals inhabiting them in the Temburong District, Brunei. An unstructured interview approach will be used to investigate hunting behaviours and motivations and human wellbeing and how both are altered by recent infrastructure developments in the region, working with local residents. Mammal communities will be analysed using camera traps set up along a linear gradient of hypothesized hunting pressure to understand hunting impacts on mammal biodiversity. The derived knowledge will be used to co-design conservation solutions with communities.
