Financial Evidence

You need to show that you have enough money to pay for your course fees and for your living expenses when you apply for a Student Route visa. The amount you need to show depends on your circumstances.

If you have been living in the UK with immigration permission for 12 months or longer on the date you make your visa application:

  • you automatically meet the financial need and are not required to show evidence of funds

If you are coming to the UK or have not lived in the UK for at least 12 months:

  • you will need to prove that you have sufficient funds to cover both the tuition fees and living costs

You will usually find your tuition fees for the first year of your course on your offer letter and CAS statement. Student Route applicants need to show that they have the funds available for, or that they have paid, a full year’s course fees.

The monthly sums required for living costs for students studying at Newcastle are:

  • £1,136 per month for the student
  • plus £680 per month per dependant, up to a maximum of 9 months

Money for living costs must be shown for every month of the course, up to a maximum of 9 months. For example, if you are applying as a student with no dependants and studying on a course which lasts 12 months. You will need to prove that you have at least £10,224 for living costs.

If you are living in University accommodation (NOT private or a managed partnership) and you have already paid for this accommodation:

  • a maximum of £1,483 can be deducted from the required amount of living costs to be shown in your financial evidence
  • however, they cannot be deducted from your required tuition fees

Any accommodation fees paid will be shown in your CAS.

How to prove that you have the correct level of funds

Funds can be shown through:

  • Instant access bank statement in your name (or including your name as a joint account holder). Current accounts are more appropriate for Student Route applications as they tend to show your most recent transactions
  • A letter from your bank
  • A Certificate of Deposit
  • A letter confirming a loan in your name
  • Official financial or government sponsorship letter

You must be able to show that all required funds have been held in the account for at least 28 days. The date of the closing balance being no more than 31 days before the date of your visa application. Please refer to the Home Office website for full details of the requirements for your financial evidence.

Overseas funds must be converted to pounds sterling (£) on the date of application using the currency converter at www.oanda.com. If you are making your application in the UK, it is highly recommended that you provide financial evidence from a UK bank account. Bank statements from parents can be used, but you will need to provide:

  • official evidence of your relationship
  • a consent letter from your parents

Please see Student Route guidance for specific criteria for the use of parental bank statements.

How to prove that you can pay or have paid your tuition fees

If you have not yet paid your fees, you will need to prove either that:

  • the funds have been available in your bank account for 28 days
  • you have an approved loan
  • your official financial sponsor will be paying your fees

If you have paid your fees this will be documented in your CAS, or you can provide an official certificate of tuition fees. You will normally receive a receipt from the university when you make payments for tuition fees.

University scholarships

You should advise the department producing your CAS of the scholarship at the earliest opportunity if you are in receipt of:

  • a Newcastle University scholarship
  • any scholarship paid through the University

University scholarships can only be used as evidence of fee payment or maintenance if details are shown in your CAS. Paper evidence will not be accepted.
