Accessing Healthcare

It's important to register with a local doctor when you arrive at University so you can access medical advice if you need it.

Register with a Doctor (General Practitioner)

Wellbeing health fair

Come and join us to register with a local doctor and find out about local medical services. Our wellbeing teams will also be on hand to answer any queries you may have.

  • Location: Boiler House (building Number 10 on the campus map)
  • Time: 09:30 – 16:30 daily

Additional drop in session: Drug and Alcohol - Advice and Guidance, Promoting Harm Reduction

  • Dates: 18 - 20 September 2024

The University operates a harm reduction approach to drugs and alcohol. This policy aims to minimise the harms which occur from alcohol and drugs rather than adopting a zero tolerance approach. This drop in session is for all students and colleagues who would like to know more about the sources of support available. Representatives from Student Health and Wellbeing, the Students' Union and external partners will be available.

Medication

Please bring to University one month's supply of any prescribed medication you are currently taking. This will ensure that you have enough medication until you can get registered with a local doctor.

Accessing medical help

In the UK there are three main ways for you to receive medical help if you need it:

For minor illnesses you can go to your local pharmacy as a first point of contact. Pharmacists can offer clinical advice for minor health concerns such as coughs and colds, sore throats and tummy troubles. They can assess symptoms and will advise you if you need to seek further medical help

Attend your doctor's surgery via a pre-booked appointment. These appointments can take place either over the phone, online or face-to-face

If you are not sure which service to use, you can use NHS 111. Use this service to find out where to get help if you cannot contact your doctor during the day, or when your doctor is closed
