Registering for Work on Campus

How to register as a casual student worker for work opportunities on campus.

Before starting any work for the University

Before starting any work for the University, you must ensure that you complete the following steps:

  • Step 1: Register as a student worker via Student Portal
  • Step 2: Complete a right to work check with People Services
  • Step 3: Have a work assignment booked in the My Working Hours app.

Step 1: How do I register as a student worker via Student Portal?

You can find guidance on how to register for work and how to check if you are already registered in our Registering for Work Guide (PDF: 446KB).

Please note if you register for work and do not complete any assignments in the six months after you have registered, your personnel record will be deleted. Therefore, we advise you to only register for work, if you intend to work on campus shortly after registering.

After you’ve registered on Student Portal, you’ll receive an email within two working days inviting you to join the Jobs on Campus Teams site.  The site is where some of our on campus work assignments are advertised, you can find further information on the Jobs on Campus website

Step 2: Complete your right to work check

For UK/Irish Nationals, if you have a valid passport please email the Recruitment Team at recruitment@ncl.ac.uk to request an online check via our IDVT provider (YOTI).  If you will be using an expired passport or birth certificate/proof of NI for your right to work check, please email a copy to recruitment@ncl.ac.uk and they will arrange a face to face appointment

For non-UK/Irish Nationals, please complete an online right to work check. You can then email recruitment@ncl.ac.uk with your share code and confirmation of date of birth and we can organise a video call with you to verify this check.

During peak times (September to November and February to April) we will require a minimum of five working days notice before your work is due to commence to arrange an appointment. Please ensure you have a right to work appointment booked at least one day in advance of your assignment start date.

Step 3: Have a work assignment booked in the My Working Hours App?

Once your first assignment has been created you will receive an email providing you with a link to access the app.

Guidance on how to use the My Working Hours App can be found here.  Please note you will not be able to access the My Working Hours App until the department you are working for create your first work assignment.

What happens if I register for work but do not complete an assignment?

If you register for work via Student Portal and do not complete any assignments in the six months after you have signed up, your personnel record will be deleted.  Therefore, we advise you to only register for work, if you intend to work on campus shortly after registering, otherwise you will need re-register should you be offered assignments after this date.

If you have worked previously but have not completed any assignments within the last 12 months, your personnel record will be made a 'leaver'. You will be able to re-register if you are offered any assignments after this date
