About NIHR Innovation Observatory

The NIHR Innovation Observatory (IO) has a national remit to deliver medical horizon scanning: keeping an eye on the future for upcoming change.

Understanding future medicines, devices and diagnostics helps shape policy, regulation, approvals and stimulate research activity. The IO looks for technologies up to 10 years away from being publicly available, tracking them as they evolve from patent, and if successful, to patient.

The IO is organised into a number of Research Programmes:

  • Medicines – providing timely data and intelligence on 'innovative medicines' in the development pipeline for human use.
  • Devices, Diagnostic and Digital – identifying new and emerging MedTech innovations with the potential to address unmet health needs.
  • Insights – capturing patient, public and practitioner insights to inform and empower appropriate, timely innovation.
  • Industry – engaging the SME community to enable innovation into the NHS.
  • Digital & AI – continuously developing our cloud-based IT systems and AI tools to ensure they use the latest technologies in the digital and data processing space.
  • Information – underpinning the programmes with robust evidence and data identification and retrieval methods.

You can access the tools and methodologies developed in the delivery of the Observatory’s programmes to support your translational research.

See our trials data dashboards of the latest therapeutic interventions and diagnostic tests in clinical development for COVID-19, collated via horizon-scanning of multiple sources to support the national response.

Stage

The Innovation Observatory predominantly supports researchers at stages D3-T3 of the translational research pathway but can provide pertinent information along all stages of the innovation pathway. Please get in touch as soon as possible, at any stage.
