About Newcastle Joint Research Office (NJRO)

The Newcastle Joint Research Office (NJRO) is a partnership between Newcastle University (University) and the Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (Trust).

We support researchers in the design, development, delivery, implementation and closedown of world-class experimental, translational and clinical research. We also work closely with other universities and trusts in the region, and are key within Newcastle Health Innovation Partners.

The team comprises both University and Trust colleagues who provide support across the research life cycle, including:

  • governance, regulatory compliance, and sponsorship
  • funding development, costing and contracting
  • biobanking governance
  • quality assurance and audits
  • data protection compliance
  • performance metrics.

We partner with researchers and provide the best support we can, throughout the research life cycle, allowing us to continually improve patient outcomes and embed research into everyday clinical care.

Stage

Due to the regulatory requirements in place to conduct clinical research, it is strongly encouraged that researchers contact the NJRO. This should be done as soon as possible to ensure the right teams are brought in at the right time.

We ask that all researchers complete the online Project Initiation Form (PIF) in as much detail as possible to start. Don’t worry if you’re at an early stage and unable to complete all required fields. Once you’ve submitted it, a member of the team will be in contact to guide you through the process ready for submission.

To fully support projects ready for submission, we require a minimum notice of:

  • 4 weeks for low risk studies
  • 8 weeks for complex studies (for example: multi-site, Medical Device or CTIMP)

We understand that some research calls do have very short timelines for submission which can be accommodated if we work to these minimum notice periods.

The NJRO provides dedicated support across the entire Translational Research Pathway (D1-T3).
