Aims
To raise awareness of and develop students transferable mathematics and statistics career management skills. To enable students to utilise current careers information to help make future career decisions.
To reflect and market their employability attributes in job applications. The career management aspects of the module will develop student’s understanding of what it means to be employable in the national and international labour market.
To develop oral presentation skills for mathematics and statistics. To develop teamwork skills for organisation. To develop the ability to write thorough and complete reports on mathematical and statistical problems. To learn a piece of mathematics or statistics independently.
Outline Of Syllabus
Professional skills: employability and enterprise attributes awareness and development, occupational/LMI awareness, marketability including application writing and interview technique. Group Project: Mathematical and statistical topics as appropriate for the projects allocated.

Teaching Rationale And Relationship
Information is provided through the use of lecturer based instruction for key principles. Students learn through independent study to achieve the specific learning outcomes. Students will develop: teamwork and communication skills through group learning and peer assessment; presentation skills through lectures and giving a presentation; mathematical and statistical writing skills through private study, group learning and writing the report.
Assessment Methods
The format of resits will be determined by the Board of Examiners
Other Assessment
Description | Semester | When Set | Percentage | Comment |
---|---|---|---|---|
Written exercise | 2 | M | 40 | Project report, will incorporate group and individual aspects |
Portfolio | 1 | M | 30 | Career Management Portfolio including a graduate landscape report, career plan and a reflective CV. |
Prof skill assessmnt | 2 | M | 30 | Project Presentation. Will incorporate group, peer and individual aspects. |
Assessment Rationale And Relationship
Students will need to obtain a pass mark on each of the three pieces of assessment. The professional skills portfolio has two elements: a career development plan which covers self and occupational awareness into a career area of their choice, with goal setting; as well as a professionally written current CV, along with a 'future CV' with reflective commentary. The presentation and report will assess students' individual and team-working skills in mathematical and statistical presentations and writing. The individual will gain credit for the presentations they give and for the report submitted by the group. Each student will do a project in a group of five people. At the end of the project the group will deliver a presentation and a report. Each individual gives a presentation for approximately 5 minutes contributing to a group presentation lasting approximately 25 minutes. Each individual assesses the presentations of a number of other individuals and provides feedback. The presentation and report have an individual and group assessment. Reports should be 8-12 pages.
