The Northumbrian border was for centuries the site of conflict. This lecture shows how the violence and division of past conflicts, so deeply inscribed in the landscape, was reimagined as romantic heritage. In the context of Brexit and the campaign for Scottish Independence, it is worth recalling that the borderlands of Britain have been sites of amity and cultural exchange, as well as enmity and conflict.
