Advice for university staff

  1. Listen to the student. Give the student the opportunity to talk and give you the information you need. Be a sympathetic listener - it can reassure the student that encountering difficulties is a normal part of student life and might be all that is required.
  2. Assess the situation. Make judgements with the student about the severity and immediacy of the situation and decide what, if anything, you need to do.
  3. Take action. Take any action you need to based on the above two stages.
  4. Follow up. Make sure that there are no loose ends, and that the student is aware of what's been done and who they can go to if they need further support.

Student Death: Response and Support

The death of one of our students represents a profound loss that can affect our entire community,  we have a clear compassion led procedure (we'll insert the link to our procedure here once it is ready) that should be followed in the event of a student's death, but in every case if you become aware of the death of a student you should

  1. If it is during office hours, telephone Student Health and Wellbeing Services (SHWS) on extension 83333 (or, from a mobile or external line, 0191 208 3333) and ask for a senior manager in SHWS, explaining that you are calling to report the death of a student and confirm that the team is aware.
  2. If it is outside office hours, telephone Campus Security on extension 86666 (or, from a mobile or external line, 0191 208 6666), explaining that you are calling to report the death of a student and confirm that the team is aware.
