NuAcT PhD Studentship now accepting applicants

The School of Modern Languages is happy to share the launch of a new NUAcT PhD Studentship, focussing on the broad area of Parisian Cultural History in the Long Nineteenth Century.

Award Summary

The studentship will cover 100% of home tuition fees and provide an annual stipend of £18,622 (FTE) for 3 years, in addition to a research expenses allowance. Successful international candidates will need to be able to fund the difference between home fees and international tuition fees (applications can be made to the university NUORS scheme for assistance, but it is competitive and cannot be guaranteed).

Overview

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to share their own research project related to the topic. This will be researched by Dr Hannah Scott. Interdisciplinary proposals are warmly encouraged and applications are welcomed from students of Modern Languages, Musicology, History, Art History, Theatre Studies, Comparative Studies, or other related fields in the Humanities.

Possible topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Visual culture and its evolutions
  • Public entertainments and spectacles
  • Music in public and/or private spaces
  • Popular culture, broadly conceived
  • Cultural impacts of revolution, politics, and social change
  • High-/low-brow culture
  • Fashion, material culture, and commerce
  • Cultural history and literature/text
  • Cultural divides by class, gender, origins, age…
  • Parisian culture and its national/international connections

The successful candidate will be expected to focus primarily on long nineteenth-century Paris (1789-1914), but proposals with a broader chronological and/or geographical focus will also be considered. Please note that all doctoral candidates are co-supervised, and a suitable second supervisor will be selected depending on the particular focus of the successful candidate’s project.

The application closing date is 10 April 2024.
