Project Title

Building architecture autonomy: A Study of Design Knowledge as a Discursive Practice in China (1995-2015)

Project Description

This research aims to study the awakening of autonomous architecture in contemporary China and how it is constructed through case studies, including group design practices, domestic and international biennials, and related conferences and publications. The active participants and organizers of these design practices and events are Yung Ho Chang, Wang Shu, Liu Jiakun, and Zhang Lei, to name a few. It aims to answer how architecture autonomy has been achieved during the confrontation between these architects and the state and the market, specifically, the private investors and developers, city officials, and state control.
