Your Welcome Week programme runs from 16 to 22 September 2024.
To help you transition smoothly into university life, we've designed this bespoke schedule for your course. It contains a mix of informative sessions, networking opportunities, and fun activities.
Some activities are specific to your course, while others will introduce you to opportunities and events across the wider University.

- most sessions are compulsory, but some are optional - this will be specified in the activity description.
Mathematics Course
As part of induction, those who join our Economics postgraduate programmes will be required to undertake an intensive one-week preparation course in mathematics and statistics to support their transition onto the programmes. This will be alongside our week-long postgraduate induction schedule.
There is no preparation required prior to taking part and you can find out more details about the preparation course below.
The benefits of undertaking the preparation course?
- By covering mathematics and statistics comprehensively and employing a hands-on problem-solving approach, you will be prepared for the core topics in our economics programmes.
- You will be equipped with the essential mathematical and statistical skills required to excel in various economics courses. By participating in this intensive course, you will gain a comprehensive understanding of key concepts, fostering a solid foundation for your academic journey.
- You will develop the skills and confidence necessary to engage with complex economic models, analyse data, and make informed decisions based on statistical and mathematical insights.
Active participation is encouraged during these sessions, to help you to develop skills and deepen your understanding of mathematics and statistics.
You will be expected to take notes during these sessions to reinforce your learning and refer back to them when needed, therefore pen and paper is recommended.
What does the preparation course include?
The course adopts a highly interactive approach to learning and teaching, drawing upon the principles of active learning theory. You will actively participate in the learning process through various engaging activities and discussions.
You will have the opportunity to work both individually and in small learning groups, to foster the exchange ideas, discussions, and improved learning from different perspectives.
There will be no self-directed study or homework required in addition to the sessions listed above.
There will be further sessions in the week commencing the 23 September but these are listed on your academic timetable.

Business School Director of Digital Education, Dr David Grundy, will introduce you to LinkedIn Learning and explain how you can use this to support your studies. This session will be recorded for those unable to attend live. Once you have completed your registration you will receive an email with details of how you can access LinkedIn Learning.

13:00 - Wellbeing Welcome with Senior Tutor - NUBS 2.04
Time: 13:00 to 14:00

Hear about the support available to you. This session is led by your Senior Tutors, Professor Atanu Ghoshray, and will include input from our Student Wellbeing Adviser.
You will also be able to access key wellbeing information on the Core Canvas Induction Course – you will have access once you have completed registration.
14:00 - Personal Tutor Meetings - NUBS/FDC

Come to a group meeting with your allocated Personal Tutor. They will be your own point of contact during your programme for advice and guidance on personal and academic matters. You will be notified of your Personal Tutor and room details by email.
Changes to Personal Tutor sessions may be required due to staff availability.

Tuesday 17 September to Wednesday 18 September - Students’ Union Clubs and Societies Fair

At the Clubs and Societies Fair, you will find members from the majority of the 65 clubs and 200 societies, ready and willing to answer any question you may have about joining, cost, socials, training and more! It’s the perfect opportunity to see what we have on offer and mingle with those already involved. You may even see some demonstrations. From Archery to Zumba there really is something for everyone with our fantastic student led clubs and societies.
Please note: 10:00 to 11:00 is Quiet Hour whereby we will be making adjustments to the environment to make it less sensory stimulating for those that may have a hidden disability.
