Women in Tech Award for digital and social innovation expert
Manager of world-leading research group Open Lab, Rachael Pattinson, has been recognised for her outstanding work in the tech industry.

The awards help put a spotlight on the extraordinary women in the tech sector who work across a range of diverse roles, making huge contributions to the industry.
Rachel is a participant of Newcastle University Business School’s Strategic Leadership MSc programme.
The programme has been designed to enable participants to develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours appropriate for Senior Leadership.
It capitalises on the Business School’s strategic focus on Leading on Leadership and the Future of Work to prepare learners for a future they can shape in any international context. Taking a globally responsible and connected approach to leadership development, the programme provides participants with a unique, in-depth experience of mapping and measuring your personal and systemic impact relating to the Future of Work against the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
“I’m amazed and completely delighted to be named as a TechWomen100 award winner. I’ve only worked in a digital role for 18 months and it feels like a big achievement to be part of this list, which recognises some incredible women working in technology.
“I was shortlisted for my work managing digital research and innovation programmes in Open Lab, part of Newcastle University’s School of Computing, my co-ordination of the GetPPE Newcastle project which provided over 30,000 items of PPE to front-line health workers during the first national COVID-19 lockdown, and the support I provide as a charity director at creative learning company Mortal Fools.
“In 2020, I’ve also started an MSc in Strategic Leadership with Newcastle University Business School as part of my Senior Leader Degree Apprenticeship. It’s a brilliant new challenge for me and I’m learning a lot.

I’m learning lots of new concepts, discovering different perspectives on leadership and thinking about reflective practice and trying to bring all of that back into my job. I’m also studying with an amazing group of professionals – some from Newcastle University, but a lot from other organisations too, and I’m learning from them as well."
From 2020 onwards alongside managing the Digital Civic’s CDT, Rachel will be managing Newcastle University and Northumbria Uniersity’s Centre for Digital Citizens - £3.7 million EPSRC funded project, co-ordinating the programme’s network of over 30 partners.
I’ve also started an MSc in Strategic Leadership with Newcastle University Business School as part of my Senior Leader Degree Apprenticeship. It’s a brilliant new challenge for me and I’m learning a lot.
