Bioprocessing

Bioprocessing

Overview

Bioprocessing is one of our 10 main research themes. Find out about what we do, and which members of staff are involved.

Bioprocessing has been a mainstay of biotechnology for many years. Biological systems have been used to research, develop, manufacture, and commercialise a wide range of products.

These include other industrially important chemicals such as:

  • pharmaceuticals
  • enzymes
  • biofuels

One of the challenges of bioprocessing is the scaling up of lab-based systems to industrial scale production

Synthetic Biology offers approaches to enhance the efficiency of these processes. It is important to understand the intended large-scale production approach in the design of synthetic biological systems.
