Medicine and healthcare are two of the most exciting and potentially rewarding areas of application for synthetic biology.

Many of these applications are challenging due to the complications of regulation and certification. Despite this, we're making progress in many areas.

These areas include:

• the development of new therapeutics
• overcoming antibiotic resistance
• new forms of biosensors

Longer term developments include the use of bacteria programmed to target cancerous cells. We're also looking into reprogrammed human cells that undergo apoptosis under conditions likely to lead to tumour formation.

We're using synthetic biology approaches to study the process of ageing. These approaches are offering new intervention strategies.
