About Rebecca's career
Describe your current occupation:
I am currently an English teacher at a language school in Brazil, teaching young learners to develop their communicative abilities. I also work for an NGO with a partnership with the American Embassy in Brazil providing online English lessons to black and indigenous students.
The international aspect of the university allowed me to make connections with students from all over the world. It was a life-changing experience to be able to learn more about other cultures and perspectives.
Studying Linguistics at Newcastle University
What was your work/study experience before joining this course?
I was an English teacher at public and private schools in Brazil for 7 years. I had studied English Language Teaching at the undergraduate level, my decision to pursue a master’s degree in Applied Linguistics was motivated by a desire to enhance and refine my teaching abilities.
How was the course for you?
It was one of the most fulfilling experiences that I have had as an English teacher and a student. In my career, I have experienced challenges in classroom that made me perceive gaps that I wanted to investigate and understand better. The modules offered were very up to date to what I have encountered in classrooms, giving me new insights and redefining concepts that I used to have.
Our professors were very inspiring for me as they had a wealth of experience and passion for teaching. Moreover, their commitment to student support and empathy towards our needs further enhanced the learning environment.
What advice would you give to a student interested in studying Applied Linguistics and TESOL?
First, go for it! Secondly, in the beginning, it will seem to be very challenging. In fact, it is, but with perseverance and dedication you will realise how much the course structure allows you to grow as a researcher and a professional. Thirdly, consider your MA as a full-time job, the library will be your workplace. Use your time to learn as much as you can by reading and engaging in discussions with your classmates and professors.
What was the best thing about studying at Newcastle?
The international aspect of the university allowed me to make connections with students from all over the world. It was a life-changing experience to be able to learn more about other cultures and perspectives.
The support of the staff was also essential for the completion of my studies. The conversations that I had with the professors, especially with my supervisor Chris, were vital for my understanding and growth.
Finally, the city is full of life and diversity. As a student, I really enjoyed that everything was walking distance and affordable. There are lots of places where you can just take your computer with you and work on your essays like cafes and parks. I am glad that I chose Newcastle to be my home for one year.
