Studying Linguistics at Newcastle University
What was your work/study experience before joining this course?
I was a Secondary English Teacher at a public school in Thailand for almost four years.
How was the course for you?
It was the most eye-opening and pleasant experience of my educational life. The course offered multiple choices of modules, which were up-to-date and hands-on, and were also suitable for my interests and future career goals.
It has filled the gaps in my knowledge from my previous job and helped me to understand what good practice is and how to apply it in my future career.
I was generally pleased with the instructional approaches and appreciated the lecture videos shared in advance of in-person classes. This helped me to understand the general concepts of the lessons before discussing them with my course mates in the classroom.
Each lecturer provided relevant articles to help students grasp key elements of their modules and assisted us in advancing our learning and teaching competence on this programme. The support we received from the school and the lecturers was a great help. They never overlooked our difficulties, with both academic and well-being issues, and I was so proud and happy to be part of this programme.
How has studying Applied Linguistics and TESOL at Newcastle helped you in your career?
It has helped me to use English at work. In my current role, I have to communicate with business partners in written and spoken English via emails, phone calls and in-person meetings. Moreover, since my classmates were from various countries across the world, I gained good intercultural communication skills, and I use these skills a lot when communicating with business partners from different cultures.
What advice would you give to a student interested in studying Applied Linguistics and TESOL?
This course is excellent if you are interested in teaching English as a second language. It not only helps you with theoretical issues but also gives you hands-on practical skills.
What was the best thing about studying at Newcastle?
It was like a second home to me. I felt safe living there, and people were friendly and lovely.
The city is great - compact and well-connected and the campus is right in the city centre, a walkable distance from my former accommodation. I believe it is one the best cities for international students to reside in since it has all the facilities you need. I had great memorable moments living there and I will always love Newcastle.
